Distinguishing Features Of Work

This is professional legal work in research, consultation, and court trials involving the City's legal affairs. Work is performed under the general direction and review of a higher level attorney. Work is directed and reviewed through the establishment of goals and subsequent evaluation of progress toward goal attainment.

Examples Of Work Performed
• Conducts trials and hearings, does research and provides consultation involving complex and difficult legal issues affecting the City's interests. • Composes legal opinions, contracts, charter revisions, ordinances, statutes and other legal documents as assigned. • Represents the City in litigation in Sedgwick County District Court, Court of Appeals of the State of Kansas, the Supreme Court of the State of Kansas, the federal courts and in proceedings before administrative and legislative bodies of other jurisdictions. • Provides legal counsel and assists in the acquisition of rights-of-way and other property for use by the City, including the condemnation of property. • Provides legal counsel to various departments and drafts legal opinions. • Conducts research as directed or as required in the course of the handling of litigation or in providing legal opinions and advice to other departments. • Monitors, reviews and supervises work of and assists in the training of lower level attorneys. • Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle. • The examples of work performed are not intended to be all-inclusive. Requirements Of Work
• Considerable knowledge of city, state and federal law. • Thorough knowledge of court procedures and rules of evidence. • Ability to apply legal principles and specialized knowledge to complex and difficult matters of litigation, together with an ability to effectively present the City's position before courts or administrative boards and bodies. • Ability to analyze, appraise and organize facts, evidence, and precedents relevant to assigned cases and to prepare written opinions. • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other Departments, representatives of other organizations, City officials, and the public. • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. • May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license. • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Required Experience And Training
Graduation from an accredited school of law with at least four years of experience in professional legal work and admission to practice before the Supreme Court of the State of Kansas. Offers of employment will be made contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which will include drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a police records check. Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
