The Community Development Department’s Director is responsible for comprehensive planning for land use and growth management within the City and coordinates development standards with Thurston County for areas within the City's Urban Growth Management Area. This position serves on and provides a leadership role for the Site Plan Review Committee, Environmental Review Committee, and Land Clearing Committee and will ensure that all new development in the City meets city, state, and federal development, environmental, and Growth Management Act requirements. The Director will participate as a member and representative of the City's management team to include short and long range planning for the City; development of vision, strategies, and policies; establishment and promotion of organizational values; facilitating quality improvements throughout the organization and/or community; and participation in community service work. In addition, he/she administers annexation projects requests, coordinates with affected jurisdictions, the Boundary Review Board and Thurston Regional Planning Council and ensures City regulatory and permit processes meet local, state, and federal regulatory requirements and guidelines.
A Bachelor's degree and/or Master's degree in urban planning or a related field with a minimum of five to seven years of successful and progressively responsible senior professional planning experience is required. Ideally, he or she will have extensive exposure to land use policies and practices at the local government level, economic development, environmental regulations related to development, and administration of growth management regulations, standards and/or principles. Candidates with any combination of experience and education which provides a comprehensive knowledge of planning principles, practices, and techniques as they relate to all functional areas, such as land use, environmental impacts, or other related areas will be considered.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (IMPO), located in the State Capital, is seeking a technically-oriented professional planner, geographer, or public policy professional for the position of Senior Planner. The Senior Planner will help administer the development of the regional transportation plan, which is one of the core elements of the MPO’s work program.
Specific Responsibilities and Skill Requirements Under the direction of the Principal Regional Planner, the person selected for this position will be responsible for these specific activities: • Conducting elements of regional transportation study and planning. • Under supervision, administer of the Indianapolis Congestion Management Process. • Develop working relationships and form teams with local planning staff, federal and state agencies, and stakeholders to share information and develop studies and plans. • Work with staff, committees, and the public to prepare, implement, and evaluate activities that encourage members of the community to participate fully in the planning process. • Provide staff support for transportation-related committees, including Policy Board, Technical Committee, the Citizen’s Advisory Committee, Multimodal Task Force, and other stakeholder groups as required.
